Fourth Annual Paoli Car Show

Paoli Car Show

Saturday morning, the Paoli Methodist Church put on a car show at the church on Devon Rd.  We had attended this show a couple of years back and we wanted to take the MG to it.  It's a very small show, maybe fifty cars at most but it seemed like a fun thing to do and the last time we went there were some interesting cars.

This time the show did not disappoint either; there were at least six Ferraris in attendance, some really nice looking Model As, and one really cool yellow MGB.  We met a couple who are also members of HCCP, Bob and Pat Bodek, who have a red 1930 Model A hotrod and the yellow MGB.  We chatted with them for quite a while and really enjoyed our conversation.  They were really nice people and I think both of us learned quite a bit from them.  I am looking forward to seeing them at some of these events.  Bob told me that there is a cruise night at the East Goshen Park Famers' Market on the 18th, unfortunately we won't be able to make it this time.

This was a great outing because the show was small but there was still quite a bit of people traffic and it was very relaxed.  They organizers don't collect a registration fee but accept donations for the sponsoring church.  They also had food and music.  Both of us really enjoyed this show.

On the way back home we took a ride through Devon and Wayne and generally took the long way to enjoy the car.

Chester County Antique Car Show

Chester County Antique Car Show

Sunday morning, after my short ride to refuel the Bullet, we headed out to Kimberton for the Annual Chester County Antique Car Club Show.

We headed up 252 to Darby Rd and followed that to 30 West.  From there we took the right at 29 to Charlestown Rd and followed that to Coldstream Rd.  There we made a left and continued on to Hare Hill Rd for a right.  The turn at Hare Hill Rd is pretty tight and steep and I was glad to have my newly deflated tires to take that that turn on the hill.  Hare Hill runs to Kimberton Rd, where we made another right, and that runs to the downtown area of Kimberton to the Fair Grounds back entrance.  I should have taken 113 and come in that way because we found that entry to the grounds was limited  but we were able to pull into the overflow area and park under a tree.

Jim Mooney's F100

This is a fairly good size show with a huge showing of Mustangs since it appears to be sponsored or related to a Mustang club.  We saw some cars we have seen before, Pepe's 1940 Buick and Jim Mooney's F-100, but there were several that we hadn't seen anywhere else.  There was an Anglia, a couple of Crosleys, and a  a couple turquoise and and white Nash Metropolitans.

The show was not organized like the HCCP shows, cars were parked as they arrived with what appeared to be minor exceptions.  The older cars, early 1900s were all clustered together by the food trucks and, of course, the Mustangs had their own area.  The show was in an open field with not much shade so we didn't stick around long.  We took some pictures, did a once around the showfield, check out the flea market and got out of Dodge.

 We headed back on a reverse route except that once we got to 30 we took Old Lincoln Highway to Warren and followed that all the way back to Goshen.  We even took the dirt road portion of Warren between Providence and Goshen.  The ride there and back was very picturesque once off the main roads, mostly rolling hills and wooded country with some open valleys.  Next year I would like to make it to this show at an earlier time and come prepared with some umbrellas for shade.

When we reached 252 on Goshen there was a dark metallic blue Maserati that led us all the way home.  That sure is one nice looking car.

HCCP Spring Show at Linvilla Orchards

Sunday was the Historical Car Club of Pennsylvania's Spring Show at Linvilla Orchards.  A little while back I'd gotten a call from one of the club guys, Jim Mooney, asking if I would take pictures at the show for the club.  I agreed on the condition that I might not be able to if it conflicted with Carlisle.  We all know the story of Carlisle so that wasn't a problem.

The show was supposed to start at 08:00 but I was a little confused so I left the house a little late.  Because I left late, I took the more direct route out 252 to 1 and then 352 to the orchard.  It didn't take long and when I got there probably there weren't more than twelve cars in the field.  I picked up my registration from Bill Kinett, with whom Jim Mooney hd asked me to check in, and I headed to my spot at the head of Section 17.

I spent most of the morning wandering around taking pictures and talking to some people.  I saw Pepe with his 1940 Buick, who I had seen at Downingtown the day before, and a couple of other people I had seen at these shows before.  I also talked to a guy who has a MG TF 1800, the limited edition of 25 made at the end of the British Leyland run, that I had seen at one of these shows a couple of years back.  He has an elaborate setup with a picnic basket and he dresses the part in a suit, bow tie, and boater.  I also ran into a friend from work with her husband and their 1980 'Vette which they were not showing but I took some shots of it anyway.

I didn't stay long at the show but I did take a walk through the flea market and I found two MG related things there.  The first was a gold Micro Machines MG, it looks more like a TF but at 75 cents I wasn't passing it up.  The other was a spotters guide poster to the MG T series.  It looks like a vintage late 70s or early 80s poster and in was in fairly good condition with only some water damage on the lower left corner and pin holes in the upper corners.  As lagniappe, there was a MG TC poster on the back so for 10 bucks it was a hell of a deal.  I got a frame from AC Moore and it's now hanging in my garage. 

By 11:30 I'd had enough of being out in the sun, so I got in the MG and headed home.  Before heading back I made a stop at my gun club to see if I could find a couple of my league guys and see what they were up to with the shooting league since I haven't been in a couple of months.  I ran into Joe N and Bobby V and we chatted for awhile in the club house.   I noticed a dark green Tesla in the parking lot and the guys said that it belongs to one of the pistol guys.

Chrysler on the Corner

From there I went back home via Rose Tree/Bishop Hollow because I wanted to snap a shot of the Chrysler on the corner.  On turning the corner at Rose Hill and Sycamore Mills, where the Chrysler is parked, I came upon a red convertible Ferrari going in the opposite direction, we exchanged waves and kept going.  This route is almost as much fun on the MG as it is on the Bullet.  The twists and hills make it interesting and a little technical in some spots.  I got to remember the stop sign on the turn after Crum Creek because I came around and with the notional breaks on the MG there was no way I was going to stop.  Thankfully there was no one at the intersection so I blew right through but it could have been very very ugly.

After I got home Charlene and I took the MG to go to The Thunderbird for lunch, we like this place because it's an old fashioned place with no pretensions and good food.  We went via Malin were we fell behind a black Maserati making a left onto Bryn Mawr.  On the way back we drove a ways down the Pike and then reversed to go home.

Carlisle Import & Kit Car Show

I was out all weekend on a work trip so there was no riding to be had.  There was some rain on Monday so no commute then either.  However, this morning cleared up quickly after some early rain that started about 07:00 but was done by 08:00.  I stopped at Boyle's for gas on the way home for lunch but I did not take the Bullet back because I had an appointment with the eye doctor and riding with dilated pupils did not appeal to me.

The good news is that the pass to the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals came in today's mail.  Now we are ready for Montse's first big show.  The show is just a little less than a month away and I still haven't heard from the welder.  I've called and left a couple of messages but they don't return my calls.  I guess I will have to go with the leaky tank because at this rate I won't have the tank back in time to have it installed.  Not happy about this.

3018.7 at Boyle's

At Boyle's the odo read 3018.7, the next fill up need to happen before 3218.  I got a receipt from the pump but I misplaced it somewhere so I have no way of calculating mileage.  ( Addendum: I found the receipt.  The tank took 2.337 gallons at $3.019 per gallon for $7.06.  That is 140.2 miles since the last fill up for 59.99 mpg.)

On leaving Boyle's I made a right on Conestoga because making a left out of there is taking your life in your own hands.  I followed Conestoga to Church, made a left on Abrahams Lane and then a right on Newtown Road to Darby-Paoli.  At the stop on Darby Paoli I saw a white Tesla making a left onto Newtown Rd.

Bogart's 4th Annual Open Car Show

Not as cold as yesterday although the morning started at about the same temps but by midday it had warmed up to the low 50s.

So with fairly good temps and a clear and blue sky it was time to head out to Bogart's 4th Annual Open Car Show.  The flyer I had said that the show was starting at 13:00, however, by the time I got there at 12:45 there were cars everywhere.  When I pulled up one of the organizers sent me over to a spot between the hot rods and the Corvettes.  Shortly after that, my friend with the Mercedes 500K replica rolled up and took a spot across from me.

This show was not as big as the HCCP or Delco Cruisers shows but there were quite a few cars none the less.  It is another benefit show, so no registration and no judging.  Things were fairly low key but there were quite a number of people and I talked to several of the other drivers and some of the visitors.  I also took the opportunity to take some pictures, the light conditions were not great but some of the shots turned out OK.

The show ran from 13:00 to 16:00 officially but when I left there were quite a few people still milling around.  This is a nice, small, local show.  I saw some cars from Delco Cruisers and some that were at yesterdays show including the Rolls I had photographed.  There was also a really nice 2006 black Maserati.  Ordinarily, I would count a Rolls and a Maserati in the exotic tally but a car show is like shooting fish in a barrel so they are not going in.

Delco Cruisers' 7th Annual Salute the Troops Car and Bike Show

Cold today, not quite in the freezing range but in the low 40s most of the morning.  No riding but we did drive out (on the closed car) to Rose Tree Park in Media for the Delco Cruisers' 7th Annual Salute the Troops Car and Bike Show.

The show is fairly big and informal.  Not as big as the HCCP show we went to last month but definitely good sized.  It is also very informal in that the cars are not arranged in any particular way, it appears that they are parked as they come in without having designated areas.  Part of this must have to do with the nature of the park as it mostly an open grassy area.  But it must also have to do with the set up of the show itself as a fund raising event without any formalized judging and need for categories.

As a consequence of that, there weren't as many classic cars as at the HCCP show and definitely nothing before the 1930s.  I did see some cars I recognized from that other show as well as the 1961 Porsche that I parked next to at HCCP and the 1936 Mercedes 500K replica from that show.

Not a huge deal but I guess a fine way to spend a fall Sunday morning and a good way to support the troops.  Next year, if the weather cooperates and we are still here, I plan on showing Montse at this event.
